Collaboratories
Collaboratories were defined by William Wulf in 1989 as "Centers without walls...where users can perform research without regard to geographical location...interacting with colleagues accessing instruments, sharing data and computational resources [and] accessing information in digital libraries." (Wulf W. The collaborative opportunity. Science 1993; 261:854-855). The communication paradigm of Collaboratories has been explored for those INC investigators working together on the different research projects. Different avenues of communication are being used, ranging from email and scheduled long-distance telephone calls to WWW-based posting of draft reports (with indexed tables, plots and figures) for the assigned writers. The public domain collaborative software Basic Support for Collaborative Work (BSCW) is maintained for INC by colleagues at the Danish Technical University in Copenhagen at DTU. It is being actively used by project investigators to share INC draft manuscripts, working reports and memos. Notices of meetings, travel plans, preparation for conferences and other items of importance to the consortium are posted to targeted newsgroups as needed.
The International Neuroimaging Consortium has developed a number of
web-based demonstrations
to illustrate some of our more complex visualization and data analysis software programs for
neuroimaging datasets. We encourage you to explore these web-based demonstrations with the goal
being to gather an introductory understanding of the actual programs. Additionally, these
demonstrations have been created with the belief that software tools can and should be developed u
sing emerging Internet technologies that capitalize on software portablilty. It should be
emphasized, these demonstrations are only models, and do not incorporate all features available in
the corresponding software distribution set. To download the complete packages, please visit
